SYMPOSIUM

Scale interactions in Ocean Dynamics
Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la Mer

Welcome to the "Ocean Scale Interactions" Symposium dedicated as a tribute to our dear friend and colleague Bach-Lien Hua. Lien extensively contributed to this field, in particular on the Equatorial Dynamics and the still ongoing  Ocean Layering field (ANR OLA). But her main contributions have been on Mesoscale and Submesoscale Oceanic Turbulence, including its related effect on Stirring and Mixing mechanisms and the impact of this turbulence on the larger oceanic scales.

The symposium will address these scientific topics through several sessions. Each session should focus on the state of art, the challenges ahead, the next scientific questions and the methods to address them. One such method, that Lien advocated and that may inspire young scientists, is to analyse very high resolution data - obtained from in-situ measurements and high performance computers - using a geophysical fluid dynamics approach.

The program (final version will be posted current May) includes the following sessions (each half a day long):

Session 1: Large and mesoscale interactions at mid-latitude
Session 2: Meso and sub-mesoscale turbulence
Session 3: Stirring and mixing
Session 4: Equatorial interacting scales
Session 5: Ocean layering and seismic observations  (OLA, ANR)
Session 6: Scientific Breakthroughs in ocean-atmosphere interactions
